The Ontario Crafts Council, Toronto Craft Alert and City of Craft are bringing the highly anticipated indie-craft culture documentary, Handmade Nation (2009), to Toronto. As the first Canadian screening, this independently produced film by Faythe Levine is a must-see in its exploration of the rise of D.I.Y. art, craft, and design.

“Handmade Nation documents a movement of artists, crafters, and designers that recognize a marriage between historical techniques, punk, and DIY (do it yourself) ethos while being influenced by traditional handiwork, modern aesthetics, politics, feminism and art. Fueled by the common thread of creating, Handmade Nation explores a burgeoning art community that is based on creativity, determination, and networking”.*

An informal Craft Chat will be held in the gallery following the screening at 8:30 pm to provide a forum for discussion about the film and surrounding themes, and particularly the D.I.Y. craft movement in Canada. All are welcome.

Handmade Nation is being presented in conjunction with DIwhy?, the current exhibition running at the Ontario Crafts Council Gallery from January 20th-March 1st. Juried by Jen Anisef, Allyson Mitchell and Michelle Rothstein, DIwhy? includes the work of Amanda McCavour, Andrea Graham, Becky Johnson, Brooke Pickett, Catherine Trelford-Keogh, Inbred Hybrid Collective, Frances Mahon, Heather Bain, Katie Muth, Katie Sorrell, Lauren Hortie, Maura Meng, Miriam Grenville, and Shannon Gerard.
