Relief Printmaking
This two-day 12 hour workshop is designed as an introduction to relief printmaking. Participants will explore and experiment and have the opportunity to learn different techniques through a number of demonstrations and hands on experimentation. There will also be the opportunity to look at the work of other printmakers. Each participant will create a black and white print plus a multi-coloured reduction print. Printing will be done using water based and oil based inks. All prints will be hand printed. There will be a $35 supply fee to be paid directly to the instructor, in addition to the course fee.
Day One:
Introduction: By presenting other artist’s work, participants will be introduced to the many possibilities offered by relief printing.
Demonstration: Transferring a drawing, carving an image and printing using water based ink.
Creation: Participants will carve their own blocks and then hand print the image using water based ink.
Discussion: Multiple block printing, reductive and additive printing techniques will be discussed to introduce multiple block printing.
Homework: Prepare a drawing for reductive print.
Day Two:
Introduction: Short discussion of drawings prepared by participants and how the reductive printing techniques may be applied.
Demonstration: Demonstration of multiple block printing and the use of registration techniques.
Creation: Participants will begin carving and printing their blocks. As the different layers of colour are printed, the participant’s work will begin to emerge.
Discussion: There will be a short discussion about additional techniques that may interest participants as well as where to purchase supplies.
Participants should bring:
An apron, if desired.
Image ideas. It is recommended that participants start with a simple image the first day. The image should be 4″ x 6″.<.
Sketch book, note pad, pen, eraser and pencil.

Needle Felt a Winter Brooch
For those with some previous needle felting experience. In this class you will be making a broach for your jacket, coat, or hat. The design includes holly leaves (flat felted) and berries and a bell (sculptural). Material fee of $10 to be paid to instructor.

Day/Time: Thursday, November 19 from 7 – 10 pm
Cost: $20 + kit fee of $10
Printmaking: Holiday Cards
This one day six-hour workshop will introduce participants to basic relief printmaking skills while exploring new techniques and creating a set of holiday cards. The instructor will demonstrate techniques. Over the course of the day, participants will carve into linoleum or softoleum to create an image that they will handprint using water-based inks. Participants need to bring a $15 material fee to pay directly to the instructor. Please contact Cedar Ridge for a supply list.
