CRAFTY BIZ: Two Toques Design at IDS10 (January 21-24)
by jen
My husband Mike Kennedy will be showing at the Interior Design Show this year, and I wanted to invite you all out to check out his truly fine (If I do say so myself) work in Studio North, Limited Edition Booth SN-34. I have been living under a solid blanket of wood dust, huddling under our duvet to keep warm while the apartment airs out after another round of oiling & varnishing, and plugging my ears while the thickness planer roars as he’s been preparing over the past couple of months, so I feel like it’s a labour of love on my part too!
For IDS10 Two Toques Design (his company) will be presenting the first limited edition multiple piece, the Tecumseth Table. Offered as a limited edition of 30 pieces, 10 in each of three wood species, the Tecumseth Table is available in locally-sourced quarter-sawn white oak or ash, and African sipo. Pictured here in oak.
I’ll be working the Two Toques booth on Sunday for sure so feel free to come by and say hey if you’re through that day or even showing at IDS.
If you’ll be visiting the booth please do RSVP on the facebook event page & invite anyone who is in to contemporary and hand-crafted furniture design.
Here’s a little design-speak from Mike if you are interested in learning more about the piece:
With this design I strike a balance between the aesthetics of contemporary design and the classical ideals of furniture construction. Opposing the mechanized perfection so often seen in the production of furniture in the current marketplace, Tecumseth displays the softness and slight irregularities endemic to the handmade object. This is counterpoised against the clean uncluttered lines and harmonious proportions of the design.
As in early 20th-century Arts and Crafts furniture where the expressed mortise and tenon joint was brought to the fore, the primary decorative elements of this piece are the elements of construction, revealed in the exposed dovetails joining the sides to the top and bottom. Additionally, I’ve done away with drawer hardware, preferring the subtle and tactile experience of a classically fitted drawer and handmade pull.
The Tecumseth side table will work in any number of settings. As it may be wall- mounted with a traditional French cleat, it can be brought to level with the height of a bed or sofa or simply mounted anywhere a small table may be found useful. In this configuration, the absence of legs or a base grounding the piece further serve to frame it, setting it apart and allowing it to fit into virtually any décor scheme. For use as a table where mounting to a wall is not an option, Tecumseth is available with a discreet low-rise base.
