FROM THE DESK OF TCA: Wanna write for us?

Jan 21st, 2010

We’ve been working with our fantastic editorial intern Stevie to generate more content and new ideas for columns and editorial features, and we would like to bring on a bunch of new voices to share ideas, entertain, and inspire TCA readers.  We will even compensate you for your contribution!

Interested? Pitch your ideas for any of the features below to Stevie at stevie.howl@gmail.com.  Writing experience is not necessary, but do let us know if you have any and send a sample or two if available.

Crafts in the ’Hood
This is a where you profile your Toronto neighbourhood in all its craftiness — with information about (and photos of) resident artists, local crafting shops, galleries, etc.

Craft Theory
We’re looking for opinion pieces on issues related to craft — e.g gender, ethnic representation, green issues and consumerism, commerciality, handmade production. For example, one recent piece was on the usefulness and limitations of the term “craftivism.”

Craft Fiction
A short story, or a serial story (by a single or multiple authors) where the characters engage in some sort of crafty activities, the setting is craft related (weaving community in Peru, an indie craft fair in Chicago), or the plot is based around a craft object.

Questions for Crafters
This is a Q&A format piece highlighting a local (or Canadian) craft-based artist, boutique owner, or someone otherwise engaged in crafty/DIY practices.

Installation, Craft, and Art Show Reviews
TCA is really interested in increasing our coverage of craft shows, craft-related art shows, and installations, whether in Toronto or abroad.  Coverage of craft-related events are also of interest.

Book and Film Reviews
Review books & films of a crafty nature.

    Dear Friends in Craft,

It’s not on your list, but my passion is DIY and I’d love to write a regular piece on DIY – relating recipes, info on ingredients, issues of fair trade and sourcing, plus real life experiences of the trials and triumphs of DIY as I teach workshops several times a month, plus make healthy cosmetics for a living.

Let me know if you are at all interested.
My writing is allover my website, but I could send you some workshop handouts if you like.

    Love & RRRevolution, Tracey

I am certainly interested! Craft Fiction! Wow. I’d love to do a neighborhood craft profile, or a questions for crafters piece.

This is such a great idea.

    Hello folks!

How about a section like the back of the Globe and Mail or the “letters” section of the “The Vinyl Cafe” on CBC radio where anyone can write in with a short nonfiction story involving craft?
    Here are some examples:
-a person’s memory of learning to quilt with a relative
-a funny thing that happened in craft school
-the expiences of teaching decorative painting

This could be a section where people write in and the best get published?
