Exhibition: Stacey Sproule @ Gallery 1313 February 3-28

Toronto-based performance and installation artist Stacey Sproule opens her exhibition, “You Just Haven’t Earned it Yet Baby” next week at Gallery 1313′s Window Box. Composed of paper moths caught swirling frantically around a brightly lit “honey”-drenched Mason jar strung tenuously above a silky knitted sea, Stacey’s installation resonates with a certain panicked beauty deep with sobering lessons.

“This piece takes its title from a Smiths song of the same name and broaches the inherent defeats that occur along the road to fruition. I am courting themes of tragedy and epic failure as lessons to apply to the journey to achieve a greater ambition. Just as fire must burn alive, successes grow from failures. The installation is a re-enacted flight of Icarus with moths to remind myself not to fly too close to the sun, nor too close to the sea. But sooner or later I will find myself enticed, and will once again picking be up the pieces. Only in the error of my attempts will I find what I’ve sought.
