SAMPLE OF COURSES OFFERED:

1063 – Painting 2 – Mandala Painting on Yupo Paper, May 15 – 16, 2010
Various spiritual traditions employed mandalas for focusing attention, for establishing a sacred space and as an aid to meditation and trance induction.  This workshop will start with sound and music to help in creating images loosely based on historical mandalas. This course will introduce the use of Yupo Paper with Acrylic Paint.  Yupo is a state-of-the-art polypropylene material offering all the attributes of the highest quality papers with the added benefits of extraordinary durability. It is ideally suited for a variety of applications, excelling in Water Media usage.

1051 – Sculpture 1 – Media Explorations: Multiples, Series and Mash-ups, June 7 – 11, 2010
This course, Multiples, Series and Mash-ups is an introduction to the contemporary practice of making multiples.  Students will work with both traditional and non-traditional sculpture techniques to expand their artistic skill sets.  The skills of modeling, additive and reductive techniques, assemblage, mold-making and social practices will be included.  Through hands-on experience students will gain a familiarity with a variety of materials including clay, wax, plaster and found materials. This experience will be complimented by visual presentations, demonstrations, group discussions and exposure to organizations in the community that feature artists’ multiples.

842 – Interdisciplinary 1 – Navigating the Visual Arts, April 22 – June 24, 2010
Over ten weeks, this comprehensive course will familiarize students with the complex and often bewildering terrain of the local and international visual arts landscape. From European art fairs to Queen Street West, Navigating the Visual Arts will provide students with the strategies and confidence to benefit from a range of professional opportunities. Students will explore those systems associated with both public and commercial contexts in which art is presented and promoted while also learning essential techniques relating to grant writing for artists, visual art as a business, networking, marketing, use of new technologies, furthering education and general career development. In-class interactive discussion, field visits, guest lecturers and two assignments will supplement practical knowledge with broader discussions about current issues impacting the visual arts.

807 – Painting 2 – Encaustic, April 19 – June 26, 2010
Encaustic, the application of molten coloured wax to a surface, originated with the ancient Greeks. Its inherent qualities range from delicate transparent glazes to thick, opaque, and sculptural surfaces. This course will concentrate on applications and safe studio use of encaustic painting for the contemporary artist. Students will work closely with the instructor to develop their own series of works while exploring the many possibilities of this historical technique. In-class demonstrations will introduce the wide range of effects particular to this medium. All electrical equipment and wax are provided.
