MADE presents “Daydreamin’- a Grant Heaps remix”
A new installation by Grant Heaps
Opening Reception at MADE Thursday April 22nd, 7pm to 9pm
Exhibition continues to June 12th
Grant Heaps provides a visual extrapolation of the song Daydreamin’ by Lupe Fiasco. Shreds of fabric discards are stitched together by Heaps in his own lyrical tracing of the scraps of memory and feelings that describe a life.
Lupe Fiasco’s song Daydreamin’ is a record of contrasts: bliss and frustration, loud and soft, beautiful and ugly, reality and perception. Heaps chose to remix the song by rewriting and paralleling his own perceived world with the inspiration of Lupe Fiasco’s thoughts on his truth, what he is being sold and what he longs for.
Tens of thousands of one inch squares of scrap textiles are strung to cover the walls of an 8’ x 8’ x8’ space. Heaps pushes the expressive potential of the fabric in creating a soft and lacy effect which describes a hard back alley graffiti. The single string of squares measures close to one and half kilometres long. The string then continues into central panels of a plastic and organza replica of an oversized needle point flower garden.
The struggles and the flourishing of life are measured through an act of making which is both meditative and obsessive.
Grant Heaps was born in Toronto where he studied fashion. He is now the assistant wardrobe co’ordinator for the National Ballet of Canada. Inspired by a quilt made from scrap his mother made him, he has embarked on a continuing project to create stitched textile works that convey the experience of a theatre performance. Grant finds inspiration in his collections of textiles and objects; his personal obsessions and the familiar aspects and companions of his daily life.
