world wide knit in public day

Saturday, June 19 – 8am-12noon
Did you know June 12-20 is World Wide Knit in Public Week in 2010? Public knitting events will be held around the world.

To participate and celebrate the close connection knitting has to the industrial heritage of the area Cambridge Centre for the Arts Artist-in-Residence Sue Sturdy invites you to join hundreds of other knitters in an attempt to set a new world record for the most people knitting simultaneously!

Where and When?

Civic Square in front of Cambridge City Hall, 8am-12noon, Saturday June 19. Parking is available throughout the downtown core including the city hall parking lot on the corner of Thorne and Cambridge Street and the Wellington Street lot across from the arts centre.

How Do I Register?

All participants must be registered before the record attempt – registration will take place 8-10:30am

When Is the Record Attempt?

All knitters should gather in civic square and be ready to knit by 10:30am. The announcement to start knitting will be made after a brief presentation includingCambridge citizens who once were a part of the local knitting industry. All knitters must knit by hand with two separate knitting needles. No circular needles are allowed. Everyone must knit simultaneously for at least 15 minutes (Guinness World Book of Records guidelines). The current record is 937 knitters so we need everyone who can knit to come out!

What Else Should I Bring?

Please bring a lawn chair as there will be a limited number of chairs available. Dress for the weather. We will run the event rain or shine (alternate indoor areas are available in the event of rain). AND we encourage you to wear a favourite piece of clothing you have knitted – you might win a prize and be in the mini-fashion show!

What Else Will Be Happening?

You can enjoy a knitters’ vendor market in city hall, purchase a delicious apple dumpling and coffee at Wesley United Church or discover the ambience and tastes of local produce and items at the Cambridge Farmer’s Market. The Art Gallery in the Cambridge Centre for the Arts will also be open with a fibre art exhibition by Nancy Yule. And on the outdoor stage a Parade of Knit Fashions chosen by our special judge will be featured as well as a chance to participate in the Knitting Games for prizes!
