VENDOR CALL: Frost Bite, The Bazaar of the Bizarre (deadline: October 31st, 2011; show: December 11)

by jen

Oct 28th, 2011

This call for vendors caught my eye in the forum on this first sub-zero morning with its crunchy grass, frosty rooftops, and visual breath. Frostbite feels like a very real possibility all of a sudden. If you make stuff with a dark or slightly off kilter sensibility, hustle and get your vendor app in by Halloween!

It’s an interesting time to be in the United States right now– protests have been heating up in New York City and across the country for weeks now. At the Smithsonian Museum of American History, the foyer is full of amazing historical and cultural odds and ends, including– fittingly– union flags, placards, and these political pinback buttons from the 1960s-1980s. I especially loved this one…

I was lucky to meet one of Toronto’s boundary-bending graffitti artists this summer who gave me a window in to the codes and transgressive potential of this really distinct area of creative expression, so I am particularly interested in this aspect of this year’s upArt show. If you’ve never been, upArt is one of the great annual art festivals hosted by the Gladstone where multiple contemporary artists are invited to transform rooms and [...]

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Red Claw Press Anthology on Sleep (deadline: February 1, 2012)

by jen

Oct 25th, 2011

The day is getting a little dreary, and despite having a gigantic to-do list, I can hear the mohair blankets sprawled across my couch calling my name for a mid-afternoon nap. It is timely therefore to be posting this call for subs from local small press outfit Red Claw Press, who are looking for visual and written ruminations on the topic of sleep. I think my submission would probably involve a fuzzy blanket orgy (warm blanket on blanket action!).

GET SCHOOLED: Power Kids: Make a Book Workshop at The Power Plant (Sunday, October 23, 2011; 3 pm)

by tara

Oct 19th, 2011

I admit to being a little out-to-lunch when it comes to keeping informed about The Power Plant‘s programming. I can’t for the life of me remember where I found out about it, but I came across this neat little bookmaking workshop for kids that will be happening there this weekend. Cheers to The Power Plant for spreading the artists’ book gospel to people of all ages!
