Creative workers don’t always live with much of a financial safety net, but, when they are good at what they do and active in their community, they do accumulate good will credits. That’s why, when local writer, bookseller, and Hallowe’enologist, Derek McCormack, fell ill last fall his substantial circle of talented friends came together to help.

The strategy is three-fold – 1) arrange an online art sale with an impressive list of Toronto artists 2) throw a one-night shindig 3) encourage donations free of art purchase or partying.

Since Mr. McCormack works as a retail bookseller and is also (in this writer’s opinion) one of Canada’s greatest living authors, we probably all owe him a few extra dollars for underpaid community service. Double that amount if you have ever been rude to a bookseller. Triple it if you have asked one why you have to pay more for your books in Canada.

Cormarama (the party) goes down April 10 at the Garrison on Dundas West. Cormarama (the art sale) promises to go live on the Art For Derek website soon – although you can peruse the artist roster now. Flat-out donations are being accepted online already (also on the website).

PS – We know the the TCA is officially closed for business but the hosting lasts through the end of April so we may be popping in from time to time with little tidbits – like this one.
