Here’s a fantastic looking three-person exhibition happening at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga which is crafty in both form and content. The show features some brand new work by Heather Goodchild, and you can preview some of exhibitor Tazeen Qayyum’s work at the Textile Museum right now in the show Veiled, which is up until February 12th.

Years ago when I lived in Montreal, one of the best things about strolling around my neighbourhood was checking out the gig posters that changed regularly on telephone poles, mailboxes & in cafe windows. Thanks to my pal Lizz and her blog post reminding me about interdisciplinary artist extraordinnaire Jeannie Thib’s installation in *QueenSpecific Gallery‘s window space. I passed by it a few nights ago in a mad holiday-fuelled rush and it provided me with both a brief respite and the lingering pleasure of pondering it for the rest of my walk…! Aren’t window galleries great for just these reasons?

GRAFT is the latest exhibition happening at the Textile Museum of Canada, a collaboration between them and neighbours OCADU. A mash-up of art, textiles and science, this show will showcase the work of students from OCAD’s Material Art and Design program. The reception is tonight!

I just got this very interesting notice about an upcoming solo show by local artist, Alea Drain. Made with washi paper and then ‘drawn’ upon with an unthreaded sewing machine, these pieces are then constructed into light boxes. Add some back-pasted coloured acetate and the effects look mysterious and alchemal. These digital images are confounding enough (in a process way, of course) that I am completely intrigued to see them in person.

In a Canadian Art History class last year, I was lucky to learn about the Inuit printmakers of Cape Dorset, on Dorset Island in Nunavut. Cape Dorset is known as the “Capital of Inuit Art,” and is well known for its rich history of stone lithography, drawing, carving and handicraft. So many good-looking exhibitions coming up in Toronto, and this one is no exception!
