Heads up to zine & chapbook makers, writers, artists, comic creators and general grassroots crafty types that registration is now open for Canzine 2011. At $15/table (which comes with a 1 year subscription to Broken Pencil) this is a pretty dang risk free way for you to share your pubs with the zine-loving masses. I have long been a fan of the Monkey’s Paw and its collection of eclectic, obscure and sometimes downright bizarre printed matter. After all, in what other book store would you find a biography of “Honest” Ed Mirvish next to a lushly-illustrated book on Hawaiian coconut shell crafts from the 1950s? I just came across these incredible embroidered book covers by Canadian illustrator Jillian Tamaki thanks to a link on Broken Pencil’s website. Tamaki illustrated the acclaimed graphic novel Skim, written by her cousin Mariko Tamaki in 2008, and her practice as an artist spans comics, editorial illustrations and much more. She also has had collections of drawings published by Drawn and Quarterly and Conundrum Press.

This is coming pretty last-minute (apologies) but erstwhile Toronto craft maven, Leah Buckareff, is calling for zines for an upcoming instalment of her newest project, The Wundrkabinet, in Berlin. Leah is looking both for donated and loaned reading copies of zines as well as stock to offer for sale. Multi-lingual and non-English zines are a plus!
