For years we lived with a matching sofa and arm chair set, super stylish mid-century canadiana bones covered in your great uncle Harold’s stained tweed blazer fabric, chewed through from years of cat nail sharpening/stuffing hunting. The set itself was quite reasonably priced from Bungalow in Kensington market, but anytime I looked in to getting it recovered I had my hand slapped away by quotes well beyond our means. SHOPGIRLS is a newish gallery & boutique in Parkdale (aka West Queen West), located right beside the workroom. A few weeks ago I spent awhile in the spacious-yet-cozy shop, chatting craft with the owner and one of the artists. I recently posted about viva voce, the artists-in-residence lecture series. This is just one event in a new set of Craft arts series launching at Harbourfront Centre on January 19, with a free public opening reception where you can meet the artists on Friday January 18 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. These exhibitions include:

I finally made it out to my first m.a.d.e. show in the springtime and really enjoyed the unique combo of art and craft on offer at this bi-annual affair.

Next weekend’s show promises an opportunity to meet clothing designers, ceramicists, furniture designers, gallery artists, and other artisans, “who believe in a vision that speaks both to themselves as well as the end user, integrating both traditional techniques and modern technology to bridge the gap between art and function”.
