EXHIBITION: Threaded Lightly by Alea Drain (November 30 – December 22, Reception December 1, 2011)

I just got this very interesting notice about an upcoming solo show by local artist, Alea Drain. Made with washi paper and then ‘drawn’ upon with an unthreaded sewing machine, these pieces are then constructed into light boxes. Add some back-pasted coloured acetate and the effects look mysterious and alchemal. These digital images are confounding enough (in a process way, of course) that I am completely intrigued to see them in person.

Wrapping presents has always been one of my favourite crafts – though the results are so temporary and depending on the recipient, sometimes unnoticed, there is something so satisfying about presenting your offering in a beautiful package. As an ADD crafter, I also like the short-termness and instant gratification factor involved in wrapping as well.

Becky alerted me to the fact that Hello Sandwich is donating proceeds of the PDF version their gift wrapping zine to Red Cross relief efforts for the survivors of the recent and devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. [...]

Prerequisite: some art, design, craft training, or equivalent experience.

This course will introduce students to basic hand papermaking techniques using a variety of fibres including flax, hemp, cotton and abaca. Students will learn decorative paper techniques to customize their paper for book, print or drawing projects. Students will leave with a sample book of unique handmade papers.
