GRAFT is the latest exhibition happening at the Textile Museum of Canada, a collaboration between them and neighbours OCADU. A mash-up of art, textiles and science, this show will showcase the work of students from OCAD’s Material Art and Design program. The reception is tonight!

There is a long history of quilting in Maryland, from the Amish quilts of Southern Maryland to the spectacular Baltimore album quilts of the 1800s. I spotted a few quilts at the Reginald F. One of my favourite things about the Textile Museum of Canada is that their curators often integrate the work of contemporary artists with objects from their permanent collection of textiles. It is a relatively rare treat to see them focus an entire show on the textile-based and textile-related work of contemporary artists. Between the earthquake and the hurricane (!), I was able to take in some amazing eye candy at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore. Lots of wonderful things on the material arts-side of the spectrum, like this eye popping beaded Alfred E. Neuman headboard by Patty Kuzbida and the cheery Smile Dress by Danielle Jacqui below. Looking forward to checking out the massive textile collection at the BMA next, followed by a tasty bag of pretzels. They’re better here!

Heads (and elbows!*) up that the Textile Museum‘s annual More Than Just a Yardage Sale is upon us this Friday. Get down to the TMC to score major deals on yardage, yarn, embroidery supplies, books, and even some vintage garb. Last year I walked away with arms full of fabric, old needlepoint books & mags, a blouse from 1910, and a wool scarf from Japan!

Back in April, textile artist Eliza Plumley partnered with the CTS and the Hospitality Workers Training Centre to run workshops with hotel room attendant members of Local 75 UNITE Here, and members of the housing co-op at 60 Richmond.
